13-15 Cowgatehead, Edinburgh

1-3 Cowgatehead is a tenement block built in 1871 by Edward Calvert. This four-storey building features eleven bays and showcases Scots Baronial architectural details while incorporating earlier elements. The ground floor contains mostly original shops. The elevation is divided into three symmetrical sections, with the bays arranged in groups of three, four, and four from the left.

The structure is made of squared and snecked stugged sandstone with ashlar dressings, and the eastern gable retains rubble from an earlier building. The ground floor has chamfered, shoulder-arched openings, while the windows are framed with tabbed, chamfered, shoulder-arched surrounds. A moulded string course runs between the second and third floors, stepping up the slope to the left. The third-floor windows break the eaves and are topped with crowstepped dormerheads.

The central gables of each block, specifically bays two, five, six, and nine and ten, are corbelled out above the first floor and feature carved crests in the gableheads, along with cut-down gablehead stacks. The building has a mix of eight-pane and four-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, crowstepped skews, and ridge stacks with circular cans.
