Description

21-23 Leven Street is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey, two-bay rectangular-plan tenement building that features a fish shop on the ground floor. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with polished ashlar surrounds, a base course, and strip quoins on the right side. The upper windows have long and short surrounds.

The entrance elevation has a recessed central entrance with a plate glass fanlight above it, a corniced mosaic fascia, and shop windows on either side, flanked by pilasters. There is a pend to the right. The first floor has a bipartite window on the left and a single window on the right, while the second floor has regular fenestration.

The shop features plate glass windows on the ground floor and a two-pane sash window on the right to facilitate the removal of ice. The upper floors have PVCu glazing, and the roof is a grey slate piended design. There is a mutual skew and a coped rendered stack with corniced cans located on the left side of the roof.

Inside the shop, the tiled interior dates from the 1930s and includes a clock on the left wall dated between 1937 and 1942. The tiles are predominantly off-white with a brown band at the ground, borders of small brick-coloured rosettes, and green and maroon bands, along with a dark green dentilled frieze. The walls feature brightly coloured maritime scenes framed in orange and green, along with glazed relief panels. Marble surfaces are present throughout. There is a small room at the rear with large sinks, and part of the original space has been walled in, obscuring two maritime scenes.
