Leith Signal Tower, 1-2 The Shore, Leith, Edinburgh

Leith Signal Tower, located at 1-2 The Shore in Leith, Edinburgh, was designed by Robert Mylne and built between 1685 and 1686, with a remodel likely occurring in the early 19th century. A public house was added in 1882. The structure features a crenellated circular tower with five offset stages, originally built as a windmill, and a single-storey flat-roofed public house at the ground level. It is constructed from cream sandstone with coursed rubble and polished and droved ashlar dressings, while the pub front is painted. The building has string courses at the first, second, and above the third floor, blind quatrefoils on the fourth floor, and a corbelled and crenellated parapet.

On the west elevation facing the shore, the pub front has deep-set basket-arched stop-chamfered openings with fielded aprons, channelled jambs, and a continuous cornice. The doorway is flanked by a single opening on the right and two openings on the left, with an additional opening at the chamfered corner to the outer left. The tower above features a single window per stage in alignment, with small single windows flanking to the right at the first and second floors.

The south elevation is abutted by a later four-storey tenement building at Nos 3 and 4 Shore, which is listed separately. The northeast elevation, facing Tower Street, has a doorway at the ground floor with two openings flanking to the right and a single opening to the left, with a single window per stage in alignment in the tower above.

The east elevation at the rear includes a single window at the fourth floor, with a foundry building abutting below, which is also listed separately. The tower features 18- and 24-pane timber sash and case windows, while the pub front has replacement windows. The interior was not seen in 1993.
