Description
Glenmay is a house located at 14 Gillespie Road in Edinburgh, designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and built in 1895, with later additions and alterations. This two-storey house has a roughly rectangular plan and is styled in the early Moderne style, situated on a sloping site. It features a coped parapet that conceals a piended roof and a swept-roof former verandah at the center of the south elevation, which has been glazed in. The entrance is located on the west side, with a scullery wing to the east. The exterior is finished in painted harl with red sandstone dressings and cills, and includes a band lintel course on parts of the north and west elevations, along with sandstone coping on the parapet.
On the west (entrance) elevation, there is a later bay to the left with a new front door set within a segmental arch. The center features a bay window, and there is a later outshot on the outer right. The south (garden) elevation showcases a central two-bay swept-roofed former verandah, now glazed in, with a canted bay to the left and pedimented dormers above. Flanking this are two-storey bays with later windows on the ground floor and paired casements on the first floor.
The east (side) elevation includes a single-storey scullery outshot to the right, which has a coped, shaped half-gable topped with a ball finial, and features irregular fenestration. The north elevation is irregularly fenestrated and stepped, with an advanced section to the right that includes a later addition. This section has pyramidal terracotta finials at the corners and a mini segmental pediment-style feature at the center of the parapet. There is a tall staircase window to the left and a circular window at ground level, with other windows being later additions. The center has a recessed section with fairly regular fenestration, and the parapet wall is slightly lower with concave steps leading to the flanking bays. To the left, there is a recessed bay with a single window at ground level, along with the scullery wing on the outer left.
The windows are fitted with small-pane glazing in replacement timber sash and case and casement styles. The house has rendered stacks with red sandstone cornicing and tall red clay cans, and the roof is covered with graded grey slate.
Access to the interior was not possible as of 2003. The property is enclosed by a coped random rubble boundary wall.
