Description
1 Pentland Road, Stonehouse, Edinburgh is an Arts and Crafts style house designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and built in 1913. It is a roughly L-shaped, two-storey and attic structure with an entrance forecourt, the front door situated in the re-entrant angle and a small loggia to the south. The roof is bell-cast and piended with dormer windows. The exterior is constructed of squared, coursed sandstone rubble, with regular window placement on the south elevation and a more irregular arrangement elsewhere. Deep lintels feature on some ground floor windows.
The forecourt, on the west elevation, has two bays with a single-storey section to the left. The timber panelled, two-leaf front door sits within a simple, roll-moulded droved ashlar architrave topped with a cornice featuring floral motifs. A battered buttress is centrally placed on the two-storey section, while the single-storey section has a single window and a coped wallhead. The north forecourt elevation presents an advanced, piend-roofed central bay that corbelles out at the first floor on the left side, alongside a tall staircase window, two windows to the left, and a blind wall to the right.
The west (side) elevation incorporates a large, canted window with a flat roof at ground level to the left, a casement window above, and a piend-roofed dormer to the attic. A glazed arch provides access at ground level to the right. The south (principal/garden) elevation is dominated by a slightly advanced two-storey canted bay window to the centre, with a piend roofed dormer above. Advanced, piend-roofed bays extend to the left and right. A two-arch loggia is positioned in the left bay, now with glazed panels in place of the original open structure, and a tripartite window is situated above. Tripartite windows are present at both floors of the right-hand bay, with the ground floor window opening slightly arched.
The east (side) elevation features an advanced bay to the right with an outshot to the east at ground level. A wallhead stack is located to the left, and a small roof outshot with a window is positioned between the piend roof and the stack. A modern glazed door is centrally placed at ground level. The fenestration is irregular, with dormers to the attic.
The windows are predominantly timber casements with six panes of glass. Plain, coped stacks are present, and the roof is covered in large Scottish slates.
A round-coped, random rubble boundary wall surrounds the property. Later red sandstone ashlar gatepiers with corniced tops and small round caps are situated to the west, with a small oval opening adjacent. A garden terrace to the south is defined by a random rubble retaining wall with five stone steps in the centre.
The interior includes a tiled entrance lobby, a hall with polished mahogany-veneered panelled doors, and a timber panelled staircase with wide steps at the bottom. The drawing room features painted timber panelling, an original chimneypiece and fender, and glazed cupboards flanking the fireplace. The dining room also boasts painted timber panelling and a roll-moulded stone fire surround with a slate inset. The sitting room (formerly a smoking room) has a mahogany or dark stained wood chimneypiece, and a small darkroom with a red window and sink is located off the morning room. Fireplaces are present in all bedrooms, including those for the maids, with original cast iron grates. Interior doors are timber panelled with original door furniture. Two original (or early 20th century) enamelled cast-iron baths and original basins are present in the bathrooms. A large fitted cupboard is found in the former Butler's pantry, featuring cupboards, drawers, and glazed sliding doors at the top. A slate shelf is incorporated into the larder, while a maids’ cleaning closet with a porcelain sink is located off the first floor landing. A linen room features fitted shelves.
