Description

30, 32, 34, and 36 Dundas Street in Edinburgh is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The structure is four storeys high, plus a basement, and features nine bays, with the fourth storey functioning as a wallhead attic. It is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone, showcasing V-jointed rustication at the principal floor and random repairs above the first floor. The building includes a base course, band courses between the basement and the principal floor, as well as between the principal and first floors. Projecting cills are present at the first and second floor windows, along with a cornice at the second floor, and a string course and blocking course at the third floor. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.

On the eastern elevation, there is a six-panel timber common stair door with glazed upper panels and a radial semicircular fanlight, centrally located at the principal floor. Additionally, there is another six-panel timber door with a radial semicircular fanlight in the third bay from the right. A modern three-bay shop front spans four bays, projecting at the left (No 30, Microcentre Ltd), which includes a recessed door flanked by a multi-pane plate glass window on the left and a plate glass window on the right. The remaining bays have regular fenestration at the principal floor and above, with cills lowered in two bays to the left and four bays to the right at the third floor. The basement features a two-bay pilastered and corniced shop front to the right, comprising a recessed glazed door and a two-pane plate glass window.

The northern elevation is adjacent to another terrace, which is listed separately (45-89 Great King Street), while the southern elevation adjoins another terrace that is also listed separately (24-28 Dundas Street).

The building predominantly features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The ridge stacks are made of broached ashlar, with a rendered and lined gablehead stack that is coped and has circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with iron railings that have spear-headed balusters and some ball finials.
