Description

12-14 Howden Street in Edinburgh is a group of baronial-style tenements designed by T P Marwick between 1885 and 1888. The buildings are three stories tall with a mansard attic and feature ground floor shops. They are constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and moulded openings, topped with slated roofs. The three blocks are stepped down the slope to Howden Street, with the central block featuring a gable. The right-hand block has a prominent Early Renaissance central corbelled chimney shaft.

The east elevation exhibits an elaborate asymmetrical design with a near-central curvilinear gable, while the eastern corner is curved and features corbelled detailing that transitions to a square shape, flanked by colonettes with sculptured capitals on the second floor and a scrolled, segmentally pedimented attic gable. The western corner at Howden Street is designed as an octagon, also corbelled diagonally to a square and gabled, with a richly decorated swagged gable adjacent to the eastern corner.

While the buildings display good architectural detail, some chimney heads along Howden Street are in need of restoration.
