Description

The Church Centre at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, located at 23 Tipperlinn Road, was designed by the firm of Morton & Scott from Liverpool in 1876 and was moved from North Merchiston and re-erected in 1884. This cruciform Gothic chapel features two entrance porches and a bellcote at the eastern end. The building is constructed with riveted corrugated iron and has timber window frames and surrounds. It sits on a concrete base and has plain barge boards on the gables. The pointed-arch lancet windows are adorned with delicate hoodmoulds and transoms at the springing line.

The nave and chancel have east and west elevations that include three tall stepped lancets, with the eastern lancet enlarged by a later plate glass window. The eastern gable features trefoiled gable infill and an open bellcote topped with a pyramidal spire. The western wall has a small kingpost with a cast-iron finial, along with some modern windows and a secondary door. The chancel has two bipartite lancets on the north and south elevations. Gabled entrance porches are located in the re-entrant angles with transepts, and there is a continuous row of four pointed arch windows, as well as a pointed arch doorway on the return, which includes timber fanlights and small kingposts.

The north and south transepts are gabled and feature kingposts and three stepped lancets in the end elevation. The windows have square leaded panes, and the roofs are covered with corrugated iron sheets.

Inside, there is a false ceiling and the bases of timber corbels are visible alongside the walls.
