36-38 Frederick Street, Edinburgh

71 George Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey and attic Baroque office building designed by Thomas Purves Marwick in 1908, with a refaced ground floor. It is situated on a corner site and features a three-bay, five-stage corner tower. The exterior is made of polished cream sandstone ashlar. The canted corner has cherub consoles at the third floor that support a cornice, leading up to an octagonal fifth storey topped with a copper cupola. The ground floor has been rebuilt as a plate glass shopfront with polished pink granite facings beneath the original cornice.

The first-floor windows are keystoned and adorned with a pulvinated frieze and cornice, while the second-floor windows also have keystones and broken cornices. The third-floor windows feature splayed reveals and arched heads that connect piers with elaborate armorial cartouches, and there is a mutulated cornice above. The parapet is interrupted by pedimented attic windows.

On the George Street elevation, there are three bays to the left of the tower, and on the Frederick Street elevation, three bays to the right of the tower, with an additional outer bay that has a splayed oriel above the ground floor, finishing at the attic with a segmental-pedimented tripartite window. The building has timber casement windows, a pitched roof with gables to the west and north, ashlar coped skews, corniced ashlar stacks, and grey slates. The interior has been modernised at the ground floor.
