14 Great Michael Rise, Edinburgh

16 Great Michael Rise is a four-storey, six-bay tenement block designed by Basil Spence in 1957. It is part of a group of buildings arranged in a 1-4-1 formation, with the central section advanced, and it forms the south side of a cul-de-sac overlooking the harbour. The advanced bays are finished with painted harl, while the flanking walls, base course, and forestairs are constructed with granite setts salvaged from roads. There are iron railings on the setted forestairs at the front of Nos 16, 18, and 20.

The north (entrance) elevation of Nos 14-20 features the central four bays that are advanced. The ground floor has a single door with flanking side-lights in the central bay, and there are three small square windows to the right and left. Each of the four bays has single windows on the first, second, and third floors. The recessed wings on the outer left and right also have single windows on all floors.

The building includes a mix of replacement uPVC and metal windows, as well as original timber picture and casement windows. The roofs are covered with grey slate and feature rendered ridge stacks made of precast concrete coping with circular cans.
