Description

60 Dreghorn Loan in Edinburgh is a former motor house and cottages built around 1909, with some later alterations. The building features a single-storey and attic L-plan design, along with a slightly later outbuilding to the west, which may have served as a stable and store, creating a central courtyard. There is an L-plan link wall with carriage and pedestrian arches connecting the two structures at the southwest corner.

The main range is located to the south and east, showcasing a forestair in the angle, with swept dormers that break the eaves to the west and stone-finialled dormers to the south. The gables are crow-stepped and include gable-head stacks. The outbuilding is also single-storey and attic, featuring a forestair on the west side leading to a door that breaks the eaves, as well as transomed swept dormers to the east and a curved corner to the southeast that is corbelled to a square at the first floor. The building is constructed of squared sandstone rubble with eaves courses.

On the west elevation, which serves as the entrance, there are three bays with an advanced gable on the outer right. The ground level includes large windows that were once garage openings, with dormers above. The forestair leads to a glazed door in the inner bay, and there is an arch at the base of the forestair leading to a recessed porch. The gable features irregular fenestration with a small window on the left return.

The south elevation has three bays, featuring a central studded timber boarded door flanked by windows in the outer bays, with dormers above. One dormer on the right has a thistle-head finial. The north gable is plain, while the east elevation displays irregular fenestration.

The outbuilding's west elevation has a forestair leading to a central timber boarded door, with a window and a half-glazed door to the left at ground level. The gables have irregular fenestration and a gable-head stack on the north side. The east elevation includes doors at the center and outer left, French doors to the right, and two stone-transomed dormers in the attic.

The windows throughout predominantly feature 12- and 8-pane glazing in timber sash and case. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and includes slate or stone ridge-tiles, with coped stacks topped with red clay cans.

The L-plan wall surrounding the property includes a pitched wall with a round carriage arch to the west and a round-arched pedestrian entrance to the south, along with a battered buttress on the outer left. The wall is made of coped coursed sandstone rubble.
