Description
8 James Street in Portobello, Edinburgh, dates from around 1855 and has undergone later alterations. It is a pair of two-storey classical terraced houses, each with three bays, forming the end of a wider terrace. The ground floor is finished in ashlar stone, while the first floor features droved stone, and the side and rear elevations are constructed from snecked rubble. The building has a base course (which is no longer visible at number 7), an apron beneath the ground floor windows, a band course, a panelled apron, and a cill course at the first floor. There is also a cornice, which is overstepped by the terrace to the left, and a blocking course. The ground floor windows are architraved, with the architrave extending down to the base course.
On the southeast (principal) elevation, there are six bays arranged in groups of two. The central doorpiece is corniced and pilastraded, featuring four-panelled doors with plate glass fanlights above. Each bay has windows on both floors.
The northeast elevation has an M-gable with a blinded window on the extreme left at the first floor. The northwest elevation includes a later two-storey piend-roofed extension in the center, a single-storey monopitch addition, and another single-storey addition to the outer left of number 8.
The front features plate glass timber sash and case windows, while the rear has 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is double-pitched and covered with slate, with ashlar skews dividing the properties, and there are gablehead stacks and a stack at the roof apex of the rear extension.
The interior was not seen in 1994. The boundary walls are made of droved ashlar with coping, while the rear wall is rubble coped.
