Description

The British Linen Bank, located at 37 St Andrew Square in Edinburgh, is a Grade A listed building designed by John Young after James Craig in 1781. It underwent internal alterations and rear additions by William Burn in 1823, with further work by David Bryce between 1847 and 1851, along with later modifications in the 20th century. This symmetrical, three-storey building with a basement is situated on a corner site and features a forecourt in front of Dundas House. The exterior is made of polished cream sandstone ashlar, which has been cleaned, and includes a channelled basement. The ground and first floors showcase a giant Ionic order, while the entablature is adorned with a fluted frieze, rosettes, and a dentilled cornice. The full ashlar attic storey is highlighted by piers with ball finials at the corners.

On the west elevation facing St Andrew Square, the building has a five-bay design with three central bays that feature attached columns, a projecting entablature, and urns on the attic piers. Steps lead up to a panelled door with a plate glass fanlight located in the left bay. The east elevation presents a simpler three-bay facade with corner pilasters and a string course marking the cornice, while the outer bays are blind. There is a wallhead stack, and the building has been extended to the rear.

The windows are timber sash and case, with six panes on the ground and first floors at the front, and twelve panes in the attic and side. The roof is a combination of piend and platform styles, covered with grey slates.

Inside, the building interconnects with No 38, which is listed separately. Although much of the interior has been altered, some original details remain. The property also features cast-iron spearhead railings and a pair of cast-iron lamp standards that complement No 38.
