Description

The Guildford Arms, located at 1 West Register Street in Edinburgh, is a former hotel built around 1800 and reconstructed by Robert Macfarlane Cameron between 1895 and 1896. This four-storey building with a mezzanine is situated on an acute angled site featuring a canted corner. The exterior is finished in red lined stucco with ashlar dressings. At the ground level, there is applied timber arcading, and the corner entrance features a pedimented doorpiece supported by Ionic columns with polished granite shafts, leading to a two-leaf panelled door. Each floor above has single windows, while the ground and mezzanine elevations showcase a varnished timber arcade with Ionic fluted pilasters and bipartite windows at the ground level, divided by colonnettes. The building is topped with an entablature that includes a pulvinated frieze and a dentilled cornice.

On the south elevation facing West Register Street, there is a three-bay arcade at the ground level, with the first floor and above presenting a four-bay arrangement, and five windows on the second floor. The third floor is slate-hung. The northeast elevation, possibly facing Gabriel's Road, has a three-bay arcade at the ground level, extending to two additional bays to the north with a minor entrance, and four bays above.

The building features a variety of timber sash and case glazing, with uPVC windows on the first floor. The roof is covered in grey slates, and there are rendered stacks.

Inside, the Guildford Arms has a double-height space with a mezzanine and is richly decorated with panelling, a frieze, and a cornice. It features a Jacobean panelled ceiling and etched glass windows, with woodwork completed by Scott Morton & Co.
