Description

6 Queensferry Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey, eight-bay plain classical terrace building, likely designed by James Tait in 1809. It has been converted into flats and features advanced shop fronts on the ground floor. The attic includes later 19th-century box and rectangular dormers, with slate hung cheeks. The principal elevation is made of sandstone ashlar, while the north side elevation is constructed from squared coursed rubble with long and short ashlar quoins, and the ground floor is painted.

The advanced timber shop fronts at Nos. 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 wrap around the northern corner, with a three-bay shop front on the left that has shouldered plate glass openings and a pierced cast-iron balustrade. To the right, there is a tenement doorway with a fanlight featuring geometric glazing. The building has a corniced eaves course, and the first and second-floor windows have stone cills and lintels. The north side elevation has irregular fenestration and a door at the far right.

The shop fronts are made of plate glass and timber, while the first and second floors predominantly feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is a double pitch M-section covered with grey slates, with ashlar skews, a corniced gable end, and ridge stacks that have modern clay cans. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods.
