Description

This villa, located at 2 Kilgraston Road in Edinburgh, dates from around 1867 and features two storeys with a basement and an irregular plan, showcasing Jacobean architectural details. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Notable features include a dividing band course, an eaves cornice, raised quoins, and first-floor windows that break the eaves, set within pediments and chamfered reveals.

On the south elevation, the building has a four-bay arrangement. There are steps leading up to a round-arched doorway in the second bay, which is roll-moulded and framed by a Gibbsian doorpiece with pierced stone strapwork above the cornice. The entrance features a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight, with a bipartite window located above on the first floor. To the outer left, there is a two-storey, four-light canted window in an advanced gabled bay, also adorned with pierced stone strapwork above the cornice and kneelers to the gable. The third and fourth bays have bipartite windows, with strapwork above the cornice on the first-floor window in the fourth bay.

The north elevation consists of three bays, with a central recessed bay that features a mullioned and transomed stair window, topped by a pediment that breaks the eaves. The outer left and right bays are advanced, each containing a single window that is offset to the left at both the ground and first floors.

On the west elevation, there are two bays. An advanced gabled bay to the outer left contains bipartite windows, with a cornice above the first-floor window and kneelers to the gable. The outer right bay also has bipartite windows, with a corniced first-floor window. The villa is fitted with plate glass sash and case windows, and the roof is covered with grey slate. The gablehead chimneybreasts feature machicolated corbels, with shouldered and corniced stacks on the north and east sides, and the east stack has moulded octagonal cans. The gables are coped and topped with stone finials and block skewputts, and some original rainwater goods, including hoppers, are still present.

The interior was not seen in 1991. A detached stable block with a piend roof is located to the south of the house, and there are high coped boundary walls along Kilgraston Road and Hope Terrace.
