Description
48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, and 60 Dublin Street in Edinburgh is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in the early 19th century. This three-storey and basement structure features seven bays and is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone. The principal floor has V-jointed rustication, while the basement is finished in painted polished ashlar. There are band courses between the basement and the principal floor, as well as between the principal floor and the first floor. The first-floor windows have a cill course, and the second-floor windows have projecting cills. The building is topped with a modillioned cornice and a blocking course at the second floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts extend over the basement.
The east elevation, which is the principal facade, has a nine-panel timber common stair door with glazed upper panels and a six-pane rectangular fanlight, centrally located on the principal floor. To the left, there is an advanced four-bay shop front with a pediment, cornice, and bracketed pediment above the fascia, topped with a cast-iron parapet. This shop front features recessed glazed timber doors at the center with geometric rectangular fanlights, flanked by plate glass windows with rounded angles and a glazed side return. In the third bay from the right on the principal floor, there is a round-arched doorpiece with a four-panel timber door and a radial semicircular fanlight. The remaining bays on the principal floor have windows, while the upper floors maintain regular fenestration, with three bays on the left at the second floor featuring anthemion and palmette window guards.
The north elevation is made of coursed rubble and is mostly blank, with a pilastered doorpiece and consoled cornice centered at the ground level, and three lights to the left of center on the first floor.
The south elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (51-59 Dublin Street).
The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and features four regularly spaced rectangular dormers. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, and there is a random rubble gablehead stack with broached ashlar quoins, coped and with circular cans.
The interiors have not been seen, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is enclosed by ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that have spear-headed balusters and urn finials.
