Description
The stables at Glenbrook House, located on Glenbrook Road in Balerno, Edinburgh, date back to the earlier 19th century. This single-storey and attic U-plan stable block features a single-storey diagonally-aligned wing that creates an angled court to the north. The building is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone rubble, accented with ashlar margins and dressings. Notable architectural elements include quoin strips, an eaves band, raised cills, and stugged pink sandstone lintels.
On the northeast elevation, the U-plan structure consists of a 5-bay, 2-storey block with 2-storey end gables and a recessed 3-bay single-storey stable at the center, which is roofed over between the gables. The outer left gable features a cart opening, a 2-leaf double boarded door, and a window above it, while there is a window at the first floor of the right return. The outer right gable has a boarded hoist door and a timber sliding door at the left return. The slate roof is supported by braced timber, and the 3-bay recessed stables include a boarded door at the center with a plate glass fanlight and flanking windows. A gabled stone gateway to the court is situated diagonally to the outer right, featuring a depressed-arched opening made of dressed stone, a depressed pediment, and ashlar coping with skew and skewblocks. A squared and snecked wall with slab coping extends to the outer right, adjoining the northeast wall of the northwest jamb of the court, which has timber saloon-style gates with railed upper sections.
The southeast elevation presents 4 asymmetrical bays, with a cement-rendered forestair leading to a door at the penultimate bay on the right, and a window immediately to its right. Two windows are symmetrically placed to the left on the principal floor, along with a door at the outer left on the ground floor.
The northwest elevation features 3 symmetrical bays facing the court, with a slightly advanced gable at the center and flanking windows.
Inside the courtyard, there is a square setted courtyard and an open pend-like link block to the west that adjoins the main stable block, with timber flightholes under the eaves. To the right, there is a 3-bay angled stable jamb with a door at the center, an escutcheon above it, and narrow flanking windows. The interior retains some original stable fittings for the stalls.
