Description
This is a three-storey, six-bay tenement block dating to around 1840. It is situated in Newhaven, Edinburgh, and has shops on the re-ordered ground floor. The building forms an "L" shape; the section fronting Craighall Road is three storeys and five bays wide. It was built in a plain classical style.
The front (north) elevation is constructed of polished ashlar sandstone, with the ground floor bays to the left of the centre painted. Random rubble is used at the rear. The openings on the front elevation have chamfered surrounds, and the ground floor windows have projecting cills. The first and second floors have droved surrounds. A pilastered doorpiece, originally associated with a bank, is at number 47, featuring a projecting entablature, stylised consoles, circular motifs, and projecting dentils. The entrance to number 43 has a replacement door and a plate glass fanlight. A replacement door and plate glass fanlight are also present at the entrance to number 45. The entrance to number 47 retains its original panelled timber external door and a timber and glazed vestibule door. A corbelled bay is present on the outer right of the front elevation. The upper floors are regularly fenestrated.
The west (Craighall Road) elevation has blinded windows on all floors in the penultimate bay from the left; the remaining bays have regular fenestration. The rear (south) elevation is three storeys and three bays wide, with a single entrance originally an infilled window, and a narrow window flanking it. A bipartite window is above the entrance. Single windows are found on all floors of the remaining bays.
Shop fronts at numbers 43 and 47 have timber casement windows. Number 45 has two-pane timber sash and case windows, with a variation - two-pane sash and case windows on the second floor in bays to the right of the centre, and four-pane sash and case windows to all floors in the remaining bays. A variety of timber sash and case windows are found at the rear and side.
The roof is piended, covered in grey slate, and retains original rainwater goods on the west and south elevations. The building has shouldered wallhead stacks to the east, west, and south, with a coped mutual wallhead stack to the centre which has circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
The interior of number 47, formerly a bank, has been converted to offices and includes plain cornices and replacement ceilings. Numbers 43 and 45 have been converted at ground level; the first and second floors were not inspected in 1996.
