Description
This is an early 19th century, four-storey and basement tenement at 1B Dublin Street Lane North, Edinburgh, built by Robert Reid and William Sibbald. The building is part of a terrace and its main facade faces west onto Dublin Street. It is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor level. Horizontal band courses delineate the levels between the basement and principal floor, and again between the principal floor and the first floor. Projecting cills are present at the first, second and third floors, topped by a cornice and blocking course at the third floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts extend beyond the basement level. There is a mews passageway accessed from Dublin Street Lane North.
The west (principal) elevation has a six-panel timber common stair door in the bay to the left of the centre at principal floor level, topped with an eight-pane rectangular fanlight. There's a round-arched doorpiece in the third bay from the left, featuring a panelled timber door with a radial semicircular fanlight. Four bays accommodate an advanced shop front on the right side, featuring a modillioned cornice, with a recessed glazed door flanked by plate glass windows. Returning to the outer right is a cast-iron gate, followed by a six-panel timber door with a plate glass rectangular fanlight. Regular window placement is visible above the principal floor, with a blind window in the penultimate bay from the left at the third floor.
The north elevation adjoins a neighbouring terrace building, details of which are recorded in a separate listing (71-75 Dublin Street).
The south elevation presents a rubble gable and a continuation of the shop front. Centred windows are arranged above the principal floor, with a pair of windows placed centrally at the second floor level. A section of broached ashlar sandstone wall connects the terrace to a single-storey piended building at the rear, containing a blocked-up door to the left and a modern timber door to the right, along with a pall stone at the southeast angle.
The majority of the windows are 12-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate, and incorporates cast-iron rainwater goods. Squared and snecked rubble gablehead stacks rise from the building, along with a rendered ridge stack, finished with coped details and circular cans.
Interior inspection was not possible in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The building is bordered by ashlar copes surmounted by cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed balusters and urn finials.
The mews to the west, at 1B Dublin Street Lane North, consists of a two-storey, two-bay former coach house. The southeast-facing entrance elevation includes a modern timber door and cement infill where a carriage door once stood, and a two-leaf vertically boarded garage door with a timber lintel. Windows are positioned above the ground floor. A modern timber door within a pedestrian gate is situated to the left, with droved dressings, a stone lintel, and surmounting railings. This connects to the mews behind Nos 63-69 Dublin Street, which is detailed in a separate listing.
