Description

St Mary's Hall, located at 16-28 St Mary's Street in Edinburgh, is a three-storey and attic row of gabled, crow-stepped, Scots Baronial tenements built in 1869 by architects D Cousin and J Lessels. The building features shops on the ground floor and incorporates the former St Mary's Hall in the upper storeys, along with a single-storey, two-bay, balustraded shop adjoining to the left at No 4. The exterior is constructed of snecked rubble with ashlar margins, and there is a cornice at the second storey. A circular corbelled turret with a pepperpot roof is located at the north end, while pedimented dormers with ball finials break the wallhead. Some attic windows have strapwork window-heads, and the entrance doors are four-panel timber with fanlights above.

The former hall includes a corniced, shallow segmental-arched doorway with a corbelled oriel bay window above it, and there is a polygonal stair turret to the south. The first storey features tripartite and bipartite mullioned and transomed windows.

No 10 has a symmetrical timber and glass shop front with a timber fascia, mullions, and transoms, along with a deep lobby that has a recessed glass and timber entrance door. The large plate glass windows are curved at the lobby corners, and there is an iron gate leading to the lobby. Other shops also have timber fascias, mullions, and transoms, with some featuring stone surrounds.

The upper storeys of the flats predominantly have 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the hall windows exhibit a diamond-pane pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are gable and ridge stacks.

The interior, partially seen in 2007, shows that the hall has been comprehensively modernised, but retains some simple decorative plasterwork and a spiral stair.
