Description
Lord Cockburn's Bath is an earlier 19th-century structure located at Bonaly Tower on Bonaly Road in Edinburgh. It features an oval-shaped open bath made of both dressed and undressed sandstone, accompanied by a weir and waterfall. Nearby is a roughly circular structure known as the "Ruined Chapel," which has low enclosing walls and a higher wall at the apse. This site was originally part of the gardens of Bonaly Tower but is now situated within the grounds of a Boy Scout camp.
The bath itself is an oval pool set into sloping ground, with a flat coping around the rim. It is fed by the Dean Burn, which has a small weir upstream and a valve mechanism to control the outflow. The burn flows in a channel around the side of the bath, creating a waterfall below.
The "Ruined Chapel" features a paved circular area surrounded by a low wall or "foundations." There is a slightly higher wall with decorative masonry at the southern end. A mid-20th century stone altar is present, and the virtues expected of Boy Scouts are inscribed on stone plinths that flank the apse.
