The Theatre School Of Dance And Drama, 106 St Stephen Street, Edinburgh

The Theatre School of Dance and Drama, located at 106 St Stephen Street in Edinburgh, is a former church hall built around 1860. It is a single-storey building with a basement and features a three-bay façade constructed from Flemish bonded red and yellow brick. The exterior includes projecting cills on the windows and decorative polychromatic brick patterns that create faux band and eaves courses, along with long and short quoins and a string course at the impost level of the northeast elevation. The entrance is accessed via ashlar steps and an oversailing entrance platt above the basement.

On the northwest (principal) elevation, there is a gable that features a two-leaf, six-panel timber door with glazed upper panels, set within a corniced and consoled doorpiece, flanked by windows and topped with a dentilled pediment. The basement has regular fenestration.

The northeast elevation consists of five bays, each with round-arched windows that display voussoirs in an alternating colour pattern. There is a modern lean-to addition at the basement level.

The interiors were not seen in 1997. The building predominantly features eight-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has a terracotta ridge, along with cast-iron rainwater goods. The gablehead and wallhead stacks are made of polychromatic brick and are coped, with octagonal cans at the principal elevation.

The property is enclosed by ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed balusters.
