Description

The Stable Courtyard Building at Wester Lea on Ellersly Road in Edinburgh was likely designed by architects Campbell Douglas and J J Stevenson between 1860 and 1869. This single-storey U-shaped stable building features a gabled pend with an attic storey above. It is constructed from stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone ashlar, accented with polished dressings. The front elevation includes a corniced string course on the left side of the pend, a cornice above the pend, and decorative skews, skew-putts, and ball finials on the gables.

On the north (front) elevation, there are a pair of small three-pane rectangular windows above the string course on the left, with a gabled dormer at attic level that breaks the eaves, featuring a vertically boarded opening. To the left of the pend, there is a corniced bipartite window, a centered window above the pend, and another window to the right of the pend. A wallhead stack with a slightly advanced chimney-breast is located on the right side.

Inside the inner courtyard, there is a three-bay block on the right with a small lean-to structure at the re-entrant angle. The central bay has a timber door with a rectangular fanlight, a large window to the left, and a small window to the right. The remaining sides of the yard and the adjoining single-storey block at the rear on the right feature irregularly placed doors and windows.

To the left, a coped rubble boundary wall borders the street, with a single-storey rectangular-plan building behind it, which adjoins the left (east) arm of the courtyard. This area includes various garage entrances at ground level and a skewed gable on the right that incorporates a recessed, cilled opening.
