Description
Auchindrain is a unique settlement near the western shore of Loch Fyne, approximately six miles southwest of Inveraray. It represents a rare survival of a traditional ferm-toun, or clachan - a cluster of dwellings and farm buildings – a type of settlement that predates the Highland Clearances and subsequent agrarian changes. The 23 structures within the township, along with 20 acres of infield land, date primarily to the late 18th and 19th centuries. The buildings are constructed of stone, and their condition ranges from ruinous to good repair. Roofs are covered with thatch, corrugated iron, or tarred felt. Two modern buildings, a Colt house and a reception/display centre, are constructed of wood. Originally covering approximately 4,000 acres, the settlement functioned as a multiple-tenancy farm until 1963, when the last inhabitant retired from farming. Since then, Auchindrain has been carefully restored and operates as a Museum of Farming Life. Architectural features include both gable-end and side cruck piended thatch roofs, open frame clamp-type byre stalls, drystone long-houses combining dwelling and byre, and shieling huts. The remaining area reflects the appearance of the settlement in the 18th century.
