Description
Old Mill in Claonairigh was built around 1790 for the Duke of Argyll as a woollen mill, aimed at providing local employment in the spirit of "Improvement," before the significant population clearances.
The building is a 2-storey rectangular block, gabled at the southeast and piended at the northwest, constructed from rubble with mostly roughly-squared dressings and a slate roof. Most of the interior machinery and the wheel were removed in 1991. The openings are all flat-lintelled, and the southwest front is essentially a 2-storey, 3-bay structure with stone projections at the ground level. The central cart opening features a cast-iron lintel, which may have been cast at the nearby Furnace.
Close to the river bank beneath the 'Roman Bridge' is another stone structure. This rubble-walled front has an opening and a parapet, resembling a summer house designed to enjoy the view over Douglas Water. However, it was more likely part of the mill's workings, where the mill outflow may have passed.
