Description
The Charcoal Shed at Craleckan Ironworks is an impressive rectangular-plan structure built in the mid-18th century, originally serving as a charcoal store. It is situated on a slope to the northeast and has undergone later alterations. Constructed as part of an iron smelting works by Duddon & Co of Cumbria, it was converted into a Drill Hall in the 1880s. The southwest features a large doorway that has likely been enlarged. There are four inserted window openings on the northwest side and two on the southeast. A former loading door is still visible on the northeast. The gable ends have been remodeled to create shallow segmental-ended gables, and the roof is covered with corrugated iron in a segmental shape.
