Description
The Comm Public House on Lochnell Street in Lochgilphead likely dates back to the early 19th century and underwent refurbishment between 1945 and 1946, with some later alterations. It is a three-storey, two-bay building that is part of a terrace, featuring a public house on the ground floor. The exterior is finished in painted render and includes a base course, along with a corniced shopfront that has fluted pilasters on both the outer left and right sides, as well as dividing the bays.
On the southwest entrance elevation, the public house has a single window positioned to the left of center, with larger windows on either side and a timber panelled door on the outer right. The northeast rear elevation was not visible in 1999.
The front features modern windows and rooflights, with a grey slate roof and corniced sandstone ridge stacks topped with various cans.
Inside, the public house includes a corridor to the right with a timber panelled dado and multi-pane doors. The Public Bar features a timber panelled dado, a curved timber bar supported by fluted pilasters and a console-bracketed top, mirrored display shelves behind with back-lit panels above, and a brick-built fireplace with a brick canopy and a mirror above. There is also an enclosed dart board to the left and timber benches along the walls. The Smoke Room has a timber panelled dado, a small stepped fire surround with a mirror above, timber benches against the walls, and original tables. At the rear, the Lounge has a timber panelled dado and a large brick-built fireplace with a brick canopy, with timber benches lining the walls and curvilinear partitions between them, along with original tables. A sliding timber door leads to the male toilets, which has a plaque inscribed 'Gents Lavatory - Slide it Chum' and an original handle.
