Description

Braeholm Maternity Hospital, located at 31 Montrose Street East in Helensburgh, is a building dating from around 1860, with an addition made by William Leiper around 1880. This asymmetrical, two-storey villa features classical architectural details and is constructed from cream sandstone with both bull-faced and ashlar masonry. The base course, cill course, and string course are made of bull-faced sandstone, while the windows are ashlar mullioned with chamfered arrises. The earlier part of the villa has bracketted eaves.

The south entrance elevation has three bays, with the earlier villa featuring a round-arched columnar doorway at the center, which includes a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight above. There is a window above this doorway on the first floor. To the right at ground level, there is a tripartite window, and a bipartite window is located on the first floor. The outer left side has full-height canted windows arranged in a 1-2-1 pattern, topped with a shallow conical roof and a finial.

To the outer right is a later canted block, which has a slightly advanced panel at the center bay with a mullioned and transomed window at ground level. This area also features a corbelled ashlar balcony with a balustrade, leading to pedimented mullioned and transomed windows in the returning bays on both the ground and first floors, topped with a polygonal roof and a finial.

The north rear elevation includes substantial single and two-storey additions, featuring plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are corniced ashlar stacks.
