Description
Stewarthall is a grand Palladian house dating to 1760. The symmetrical design features two main, two-storey blocks linked by a central, advanced three-bay pavilion topped with a pediment. Single-storey, three-bay pavilions flank the main house, connected by screen walls. The exterior is finished with painted harl and grey sandstone ashlar dressings. A raised base course is accented by a cill course at the first floor and an eaves course beneath the corniced eaves. Prominent quoins are present, along with Gibbs surrounds to the ground floor window openings and block surrounds to the first floor openings, all featuring architraved reveals, raised keystones and flush cills. A 20th-century conservatory adjoins the left pavilion, which was formerly a coach house.
The southwest (entrance) elevation consists of a central two-leaf timber panelled door with a decorative fanlight and a pedimented, Gibbsian surround. Above, a Venetian window with fluted pilaster mullions is crowned by a cornice, raised keystone, and a pediment containing a single oculus, with urn-shaped finials completing the design. Regularly spaced windows are recessed in the bays flanking the entrance. A round-arched opening is set within the screen wall on the outer left; a similar round-arched opening with two-leaf, part-glazed timber doors is found in the single-storey wing on the outer right. Advanced pavilions each have a single window in every bay. A glazed, round-arched corridor links the left pavilion to the conservatory.
The northeast (rear) elevation is five bays wide. It features single windows at both floors in each bay, with a dated cill course on the outer left. A single-storey wing on the outer left includes a single window offset to the right of centre and a pair of timber panelled doors in the bay to the right. The single-storey wing to the outer right has a glazed door at the centre within a tripartite bow, and single windows to the left and right.
The original windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case, with 6-pane glazing in the pavilions. Some skylights are also present. The roofs are graded grey slate, slightly bell-cast and piended, with lead flashings and replacement rainwater goods. Channelled, corniced ashlar ridge stacks flank the central pediment, while coped apex and wallhead stacks are found on the kitchen and drawing room wings.
The interior features timber skirting boards, simple plaster cornices, some timber dado panelling, original fireplaces, timber panelled shutters and a shelved, pilastered recess in the main bedroom (previously a first-floor drawing room). The central staircase has a decorative cast-iron balustrade and a carved timber handrail.
The conservatory is a ten-sided timber-framed structure with a harled base, round-arched and small-pane detailing, and a tapering finial above the central light.
A circular well is located on the property, featuring a simple wrought-iron overthrow. The site is enclosed by a random rubble sandstone boundary wall.
