Description
Milton Farm is a traditional farmhouse dating from 1844, consisting of a single storey with a basement and a three-bay layout. It is situated on a sloping site and features a single storey, three-bay L-plan wing attached to the outer left. There are pitched outbuildings at the rear and additional pitched outbuildings to the west and southwest. The farmhouse is constructed from whitewashed sandstone rubble with raised, whitewashed margins, and the outbuildings are similarly built with whitewashed rubble sandstone and raised margins, featuring roofs that sweep down to the ground.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation of the farmhouse, there is a part-glazed timber panelled door located in the penultimate bay to the outer right, with "1844" displayed above it within a decorative surround that includes embossed farming symbols, such as a plough to the right and a harrow to the left. There are single windows on either side of the entrance. To the outer left, there is a boarded timber door in the penultimate bay, with flanking single windows. The northwest (rear) elevation shows regular fenestration at the first floor in the original block, while the basement is blind. At ground level, there are single windows in two bays that are recessed to the right, with swept eaves from the outbuilding obscuring the basement.
The windows throughout the farmhouse are predominantly two-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, featuring raised stone skews and replacement rainwater goods. There are corniced sandstone apex stacks on the northeast and southwest of the original block, with circular cans, and a red brick ridge stack on the left wing, also with a single circular can.
The interior was not seen in 1996. The outbuildings have irregularly disposed openings and various skylights, with graded grey slate roofs, part of which are corrugated iron on the west block. They also feature deep swept eaves and raised stone skews. The interiors of the outbuildings were not seen in 1996.
