Description

16 East Clyde Street in Helensburgh is a building dating from around 1800. It is a long, two-storey, nearly symmetrical block with five bays that houses flats and a shop. The structure is made of sandstone rubble, harled on the east side elevation and rendered on the north principal elevation. It features margined windows, an eaves/lintel course, low eaves, and a quoin strip.

On the north elevation facing Clyde Street, there is a tripartite shop located off-centre to the right, with a door in the centre and window openings flanking it. To the left, there is a bay with a Gibbsian surround, where a former door has been blocked and converted into a window, with the lower part of the surround removed. There is also a window to the outer left. The first floor has three regularly spaced windows, with two closely spaced windows to the outer right.

The east elevation, which faces Maitland Street, features a gable with a doorway located to the outer left. The south elevation at the rear has a forestair off-centre to the right, with a modern aluminium porch at the first floor. There is a two-storey wing with a tiled roof projecting from the outer left.

The building mostly has aluminium replacement windows, but there are also some four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and features ashlar coped skews and brick stacks.
