Description
Bridge of Orchy Station, attributed to James Miller, was built between 1893 and 1894. It is a single-storey, rectangular-plan, nearly symmetrical island station building featuring a deep, swept roof that extends over canopies on either side. The building has a painted base course, a brick plinth, and is timber-framed with scalloped shingle wall covering. It includes panelled angle pilasters and glazed screens on the outer left and right sides. The timber panelled doors are topped with 3-light fanlights, and there are bipartite and canted windows. The swept eaves are supported by carved consoles that form the canopy.
The windows are timber framed with astragals in the upper section. The roof is non-traditional felt, having originally been grey slate, and there is a brick ridge stack. The interior has been remodelled for use as a bunkhouse.
The signal box, located on the platform south of the station building, is a square-plan North British Railways Type 6a signal box. It has a red brick plinth and glazed timber framed upper panels with three fixed 9-pane glazing. The roof is piended slate with lead flashings, and it features projecting eaves and exposed rafters.
Access to the station is via a pedestrian subway underpass to the north, constructed of concrete and reconstituted stone, with decorative wrought iron railings leading to the island platform.
