Description
Darleith House is a classical house with early 16th century foundations and extensions added in 1616 and 1610, along with further expansions in the 18th century and 1903. The building is two storeys high over a basement and features five bays. It is constructed from rubble with harl, complemented by sandstone margins and dressings, a base course, and a blocking course. The structure is currently in a ruined state and partially roofless.
The main elevation consists of a two-storey, five-bay villa with a three-bay addition to the right. At the center of the main block is a slightly advanced pedimented entrance bay, which has steps leading to a coupled Ionic columned porch. The entrance features an eight-panelled two-leaf door flanked by narrow windows, with a tripartite window above that has a triangular pediment and broken coping. The two symmetrical flanking bays have larger first-floor windows with moulded lintels. The 1903 wing, which is advanced to the outer right, has a squared whinstone basement, harl, and pink sandstone ashlar, with an eaves band and quoins. The bays are symmetrically arranged, and the central principal floor window has a pediment with a roll-moulded ogee-headed pink sandstone surround, while the flanking windows feature fluted moulded keystones.
The side elevations have three bays, with windows on each floor to the right. The ground floor features a transomed and mullioned (multi-paned) framed window, while the outer left bay is blank, and there is a single window on the upper level. The rear elevation includes a two-bay gabled wing that is advanced at the center, with an earlier 20th-century addition built into the re-entrant angle to the left. This section has a pedimented entrance porch, a plaque with a JA monogram, and a heart motif above the two-leaf door.
On the side elevation, the main gable is positioned to the outer right, while the wing is recessed to the left. There is a bay to the inner right featuring a sandstone oriel window at the principal floor. A bartizan is corbelled on the corner to the outer left, with an armorial plaque directly underneath. The outer left bay has a large window at the first floor. Most openings are windowless, and the building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The main villa has a grey slate piended roof, while the gabled roofs and piended windows have collapsed. The structure is topped with tall, coped sandstone ridge and wallhead stacks.
