Description

Circa 1860. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay asymmetrical former villa of rectangular plan with stairtower projecting at rear, 2-storey wing advanced at left and fronted by single storey service wing giving approximate L-plan. Stugged ashlar principal elevation with random rubble sides and rear, polished ashlar dressings and details. Battered base course, band course at eaves. Raised margins at corners and windows, latter with projecting cills.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: near-symmetrical, ashlar entrance porch at ground floor centre comprising stone steps, flanking battered bases to Tuscan columns supporting entablature with block pediment, corresponding pilasters framing entrance door behind; 4-panel. 2-leaf timber entrance doors with plate glass fanlight above. Panelled inner entrance door with etched glass upper. 3-light, 2-storey canted window in bay to right with dividing cornice.

NE ELEVATION: 2-bay gable end (blank at ground floor left) with single-bay side elevation of rear wing projecting to right.

SW ELEVATION: blank gable end to principal front.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: 3 bays, stair tower projecting at centre with tall round-arched window, gabled wing advanced at left, narrow window inserted to left of ground floor window in bay to outer right. Single storey service wing fronting bays to left, 2 windows at centre of NW elevation, 2-bay SW elevation with door at bay to right.

Timber sash and case windows, 4-pane, except for 23-pane stair window with stained glass, and plate glass sidelights to canted windows. Vertically-boarded timber door to service wing. Grey slate roof, piended over stair tower and service wing, profiled cast-iron gutter to principal front, cast-iron gutters and downpipes elsewhere. Piend-roofed, slate-hung, canted timber dormers with 4-pane timber sash and case windows and plate glass sidelights. Ashlar corniced stacks and skew copes to NE and rear wing gables, removed at SW gable.

INTERIOR: coloured tile floors and decorative cornices to vestibule and hall. Timber treads and handrail, with cast-iron balusters to staircase.

BOUNDARY WALLS & GARDEN: random rubble walls, stepped at entrance gate to Witchburn Road with modern wrought-iron railing. Vertically-boarded door with iron hinges to W of house. Garden to S comprising formal arrangement of paths with concrete kerbs.
