Description

1-8 Castlehill Mansions in Campbeltown is a former church designed by George Haswell of Inveraray between 1779 and 1781. This symmetrical classical building has five bays and two storeys, with a three-storey section at the rear. It features a rectangular plan and a projecting wing at the back, having been converted to residential use around 1985. The walls are made of rubble with ashlar dressings and details, all painted. There is a base course and a cornice at the eaves, with raised margins on the windows and corners, and projecting cills.

The northeast elevation, which is the principal front, has a three-bay advance section at the center topped by a corniced pediment and a blind bull's-eye in the tympanum. At the apex, there is a two-tier square former belfry with the upper tier set at an angle, featuring a pyramidal cap with an urn on top, flanked by additional urns. The entrance door is architraved and located at the center, approached by concrete steps with coped and rendered walls.

The northwest side elevation consists of four bays, with the first bay being two-storey and the cill and lintel heights matching those of the principal front. The second to fourth bays are three-storey, with no window on the first floor of the fourth bay.

The southeast side elevation also has four bays, with the first to third bays being three-storey and no window on the first floor of the outer left bay. The fourth bay is two-storey, with cill heights corresponding to the principal front.

The southwest elevation features six bays, with a projecting wing at the center that has two small windows on the first floor. There are single ground floor windows on the flanking elevations, centering above the bays. Single-storey additions are present on the ground floor.

The building has timber sash and case windows in the two-storey section, with 15 panes on the ground floor and 12 panes on the first floor. The three-storey section and additions have modern glazing. The entrance door is diagonally boarded, with two leaves, modern hinges, and a handle, topped by an 8-pane rectangular fanlight. The main block has a grey slate roof, with the rear wing and addition also covered in slate. The eaves of the main block feature a lead platform and a slight bell-cast.

The boundary walls are made of random rubble, rendered towards the road, with ashlar coping and an original urn and spear finial railing. There are lined concrete gatepiers with caps.
