Description
The rear wing of Walled Garden Cottage, located within Kames Castle on the Isle of Bute, dates to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It comprises a rectangular walled garden containing various structures. Centred in the northern wall is a single-story lean-to outbuilding built in the 19th century. A 19-bay greenhouse is situated in the southern wall, divided into sections of 6, 7, and 6 bays. Adjoining the southwest corner is a single-story, three-bay cottage in a plain classical style, with a single-story, five-bay wing extending to the rear.
The garden is enclosed by high, coped walls constructed of harl-pointed random rubble sandstone, with a double thickness of red brick facing the north wall. The outbuilding also features harl-pointed random rubble construction, with slightly raised grey sandstone margins, grey rubble quoins, and long and short rubble surrounds to openings, featuring boarded timber doors. The cottage is built of harl-pointed random rubble sandstone, with a rendered rear wing. It has tooled rubble quoins and tooled long and short surrounds to the openings, with raised, rendered margins to the rear wing. Various single-story, single-bay outbuildings are situated along the western wall facing the west. Stepped coping is present on the north, east, and west walls. A large, two-leaf boarded timber door is set within a round-arched opening centred in the south wall; polished long and short surrounds are at ground level, while the arch itself has rubble surrounds. Internal walkways are visible, which divide the garden into quarters. The outbuilding has irregularly disposed openings and skylights. The roof is covered with grey slate, with replacement rainwater goods.
The greenhouse has a whitewashed rubble base supporting a symmetrical, lean-to structure with regularly placed windows, raised at the center. The interior of the greenhouse features iron brackets, a small-paned timber panelled door, tiered boarded timber benches, and columnar supports.
The south (entrance) elevation of the cottage has a part-glazed timber panelled door centred at ground level, with single windows flanking it to the left and right. A heavily channelled, corniced ashlar wall adjoins the cottage to the right. The west (side) elevation has a replacement window at ground level in the bay to the left of centre, above which is a box dormer. A recessed wing to the left features a part-glazed timber panelled door in the penultimate bay to the outer left, boarded timber garage doors in the outermost bay, and single windows in the remaining bays to the right, with a piended dormer offset to the right of centre.
The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case. The roof is grey slate, with raised stone skews to the original block, and replacement rainwater goods. Coped, rendered apex stacks are located on the east and west, topped with single circular cans. The interior was not inspected in 1996.
