Mill Bridge, Redhouses, Islay

The Woollen Mill at Redhouses, Islay, was built in 1883 and features a remarkably intact interior with much of its early machinery and a waterwheel. The building is designed in an L-shape, standing two stories tall with an attic, and has a deep plan. The north elevation has five bays, with a central door located on the east gable. A low single-storey range extends four bays from the west end of the south wall, although the southernmost bay, which serves as a press room, is not original. The mill is constructed of rubble with squared dressings; the low range has a slated roof, while the tall range is topped with a modern corrugated asbestos roof and features end stacks.

Inside, the low range includes a dye house and a low breast-shot iron waterwheel, approximately 15 to 16 feet in diameter, situated beside the south wall of the tall range. There is a boiler at the southern end, equipped with a roof ventilator and an axial stack above it, as well as overhead power shafts. The tall range houses numerous machines, some of which were relocated from a previous mill building. Additionally, there is a rubble-built single segmental-arched access bridge located to the southeast of the mill.
