Description
Tower Cottage is a detached, single-storey building with an attic, originally serving as stables and groom's accommodation, dating from around 1820. It has undergone alterations in the 20th and 21st centuries. Designed in the cottage orné style, it features a three-storey tower with a crenellated parapet on the southeast side. The walls are harled and painted, with contrasting surrounds. Tower Cottage was converted into a house sometime after 2002. It is situated in the village of Hillside near Montrose and has historical ties to Gordon House, which is located to the east and is listed separately.
The front (north) elevation includes multiple openings, such as three door openings and a tripartite window at the first floor level. The rear (south) elevation features a later balcony at the first floor and a mono-pitched sunroom addition below, which has late-20th century double doors leading to a seating area. An adjoining single-storey range on the east elevation dates from around 2002.
The roof is half-piended and slated, with overhanging eaves and exposed rafter tails. The openings are primarily gothick-style pointed arches. The windows mainly consist of timber sash and case frames with lattice glazing, along with some lying-pane fixed lights on the north elevation. The doors are timber replacements.
