Aberlemno, Old Schoolhouse. Church Road

The Old Schoolhouse in Aberlemno dates from around the 1790s, with additions made in 1824 and between 1824 and 1861. This former rural parish school consists of a row of three single-storey buildings, each with a rectangular plan. The exterior is constructed from coursed rubble with tooled, roughly squared margins. There is a blocked opening with a dated lintel located to the left of the centre on the north elevation. The building at the eastern end, which may be the original schoolhouse, features a full-height flat arched opening with brick and stone rybats and a sliding timber door on the south elevation, while the west gable is rendered.

The windows display a variety of glazing patterns in timber frames, and the buildings have a slate roof supported by timber rafters. The roof of the central section has partially collapsed, and there is asbestos sheeting on the building at the eastern end. Between the central and western sections, there is a straight stone skew with a cavetto-moulded skewputt. A brick stack with a clay can sits atop the skew and the west gable.

The interior was observed in 2014, revealing walls that are mostly exposed stonework and a simple timber fireplace that has been altered in the central room.
