Description

Nos. 90, 92, and 94 on High Street in Arbroath are former guildry buildings designed by William Scott and constructed between 1880 and 1881. This three-storey, three-bay building features a symmetrical Renaissance style, constructed from ashlar stone with channelled quoins and scrolled, bracketed cills. The first floor has round arched tripartite windows with pilastered and keystoned surrounds, while the second floor displays shallow arched tripartite windows. A deep modillioned cornice crowns the structure, and a parapet is adorned with a carved wheel motif and a triangular pediment at the center, which includes a round window.

The central entrance is framed by a pilastered and corniced doorpiece that incorporates a shell niche with a bust above the door keystone. A central round arched window on the first floor is flanked by channelled pilasters that support a carved semi-circular pediment. Above this window is a shallow arched niche featuring a figurative sculpture of the Arbroath Guildry Incorporation crest, along with the inscription 'Founded A.D. 1725 Rebuilt 1881'. The ground floor has been altered for shops on either side of the entrance door.

The building has timber sash and case windows with plate glass, and it features corniced ashlar stacks with clay cans.

Inside, as of 2014, the interior has been modified for use as a courthouse, which includes witness accommodation and a jury room. The first floor, originally the guildry meeting room and now a courtroom, has a decorative coombed plaster ceiling that was substantially repaired around 2000. The interior also includes timber panelled window architraves, panelled timber doors, and a curved stone staircase at the rear.
