Description
No. 88 High Street, formerly a town house, was designed by David Logan between 1803 and 1808 and later extended and altered in 1844 by David Smith. This two-storey and attic building features three bays in a classical, symmetrical style. The advanced central bay includes a first-floor window flanked by paired Doric attached columns, which support a frieze adorned with carved rosettes, topped by a parapet that frames a clock and is decorated with carved swags. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, with a rusticated ground floor. The ground floor has angle corner piers, with paired pilasters above. The first-floor windows have balustraded aprons, and the parapet is also balustraded. The central bay contains an 1844 consoled corniced doorpiece and a tripartite first-floor window featuring Doric column-mullions and a round arched fanlight. To the right, there is a slightly recessed, two-storey, single bay with a pend at the ground floor, added in 1844. The rear elevation has tripartite windows, likely from the same year.
The building has plate glass in timber sash and case windows and a hipped slate roof.
The interior, as seen in 2014, is arranged around a double-height former Burgh Council chamber, now functioning as courtroom 1, located on the first floor. The entrance vestibule features a mosaic tiled floor and timber and glazed entrance doors with etched sidelights. The entrance hall boasts a geometric plaster ceiling and a curved stone staircase with decorative cast iron balusters and a timber handrail. The courtroom includes a marble mantelpiece, a coombed ceiling with a mutule cornice and three elaborate ceiling roses, as well as panelled timber to the dado and panelled door and window architraves. Above the door is a small balcony with a moulded balustrade. The remainder of the interior has been modified for use as a courthouse, including witness accommodation and a jury room.
