Description

This is a circa 1890 Scottish Baronial lodge house, designed by James Leslie, situated near Lintrathen Reservoir. It is a two-storey building with an attic, comprising three bays and an asymmetrical design, notable for its castellated features, crowstepped gables, and a crenellated stair tower to the southwest corner.

The lodge is constructed of red sandstone with yellow ashlar margins, featuring long and short quoins and rybats. A base course, continuous string course between the storeys, and an eaves course define the elevations. The windows are narrow and rectangular.

The west (principal) elevation is distinguished by a timber-panelled door at the centre, flanked by windows. Above the door is a shield bearing a coat of arms. A window is located to the right of the second storey. An inset, corbelled turret with a Lombard frieze, cornice, conical roof covered in fish scale slates, and a cast-iron thistle finial breaks the eaves to the left. A slightly advanced gabled bay is positioned to the left, featuring a three-light window on the ground floor and a corbelled, canted oriel window with a crenellated parapet to the second storey, with a corbelled projecting cill to a small gable head window. To the right of the centre, a three-stage, circular-plan, engaged stair tower breaks the eaves, with an arrowslit on the third stage, corbelled out to a crenellated parapet, and a flagpole on the flat roof.

The east (rear) elevation displays a wallhead stack breaking the eaves to the left and a gable breaking the eaves to the right, with a stack to the apex of the gable. A single-storey, gabled, L-shaped range of offices abuts to the right, enclosing a courtyard to the south. The courtyard walls are crenellated, including a circular-plan pier to the southwest corner and a pointed entrance arch to the west return, topped with a coped, stepped parapet and a cast-iron finial supporting a small coronet.

The north (side) elevation has two bays with regular fenestration on the ground level. A projecting wallhead stack breaking the eaves is centrally located on the second storey, alongside a large window to the right and a canted, corbelled oriel window to the right of the centre, with a crenellated parapet breaking the eaves.

The west (side) elevation, also with two bays, features a corner tower to the left and regular fenestration to a gabled bay to the right. An entrance arch to the rear courtyard abuts the outer right side.

The original plate glass sash and case windows remain, with grey slates, lead flashing, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior of the lodge was not inspected during a 2002 survey.

The property is approached via quadrant wing walls that terminate in a tripartite arrangement of circular-plan gatepiers with bellcast caps and crenellated parapets above a central segmental arch and flanking square-headed side entrances. Cast-iron gates with scrollwork cresting and thistle motifs are present, bearing dates of 1873 and 1912.
