Description

This is an early 19th-century stable block, with alterations and infill work added in the mid-20th century. It is situated to the southwest of Noranside House and is arranged in a U-plan, encompassing a single-storey and attic main block and flanking wings, with a rectangular infill block filling a former courtyard.

The main, south-facing elevation has nine bays, exhibiting a roughly symmetrical design with a taller, advanced central section and square end pavilions. The construction is primarily of squared and snecked red sandstone with raised ashlar margins, with ashlar detailing on the advanced sections and rubble to the side and rear. A base course is present, along with a painted band course at ground floor level to the advanced sections, and an eaves course. Full-height, slightly recessed round-arched details are a key feature of the end pavilions, incorporating entrance openings at ground floor level, and square or oculus openings above. The openings are predominantly flat-arched. The central advanced section features a two-leaf, vertical timber-boarded door, with timber infill detailing above, set within the round-arched opening. Alterations to the left-hand, ground-floor section occurred in the mid-20th century. Advanced sections are linked by a three-bay range, now featuring blocked entrances that form square openings.

The west elevation showcases a single-storey and attic end pavilion to the right, with a partially rebuilt ground floor and the insertion of a bipartite window. An oculus is positioned at the attic floor. Single-storey ranges extend to the left, with predominantly blocked openings, and a single timber sliding door to the right.

The north-facing rear elevation displays two blank gables, with a mid-20th century infill block and advanced section at the centre. A two-storey range is positioned to the left, incorporating a blocked opening.

The east elevation includes a single-storey and attic end pavilion to the left, featuring an oculus at the attic floor. A single-storey range, incorporating a round-arched entrance to the left and a timber-boarded sliding garage door to the right, is positioned centrally. A two-storey range extends to the right with a later brick lean-to addition.

The windows have largely been replaced with uPVC frames. Later ventilator grills are visible in the attic openings. The roof is pitched, with a pyramidal roof over the end pavilions clad in grey slates. The later infill block and the west wing have corrugated roofing. Additional rooflights have been added to the east pitch. A corniced ashlar stack is situated on the left pavilion.

The interior, partially inspected in 2011, reveals a significant loss of original fixtures and fittings due to 20th-century remodelling.
