Description

Menmuir Parish Church is a former parish church built in 1842 by David Smith, which incorporates a burial vault dated 1639. The church has a rectangular plan and is constructed from stugged, squared, and coursed red sandstone with margins. It features a base course and shallow pointed-arched openings with chamfered arises. The windows include 2-light and Y-traceried designs, with those on the north, west, and south elevations having stone transoms. The east gable is topped with a cruciform finial, while the west gable has a window flanked by entrances that contain 2-leaf panelled timber doors. There is a square bellcote with a finial at the apex of the gable.

The north elevation includes the burial vault of the Carnegys of Balnamoon, positioned off-centre to the left, featuring an elliptical arch with a heraldic panel above and later inscribed stone plaques. This area is enclosed by a low sandstone ashlar wall with a moulded cope, topped by decorative cast iron railings, and a taller rubble wall to the east with memorial plaques. The south elevation has a carved memorial panel to the left, set within a gableted frame, and features a carved angel head at the apex.

The church has a pitched roof covered with grey slates, saddlebacked-coped skews, and moulded skewputts. The interior, seen in 2012, includes a coombed and ribbed ceiling with corbels and foliated bosses. There is a raked timber gallery on the west wall, supported by painted cast iron columns, with cusped carving on the balustrade. The interior was refurnished around 1947, which included the addition of a timber pulpit.
