Description
Cluny Castle is an A-listed building designed by John Smith between 1836 and 1840, incorporating a Z-plan castle from 1604, likely by I. Bol. The castle features a three-storey structure with towers rising to four and five storeys. It is built in a castellated ashlar neo-Tudor style, characterized by corbelled angle features, crenellated parapets, and machicolated round towers. The symmetrical front includes a porch with three semi-elliptical arches situated between twin towers, one of which dates back to 1604 but has a completely rebuilt top. The back wings enclose a court, and there is a large neo-perpendicular chapel with an apse and stone tracery.
Inside, the castle showcases a Graeco-Renaissance style, featuring an octagonal entrance hall with red granite antae and a spectacular staircase with carved wooden balustrade panels. The first floor and corridor are adorned with Corinthian details, and the drawing room boasts rich plasterwork. A notable circular room features a tent ceiling.
