Description
The Walled Garden at Rattray House dates from the mid 18th century and later. It is primarily constructed of brick, with a small section made of stone. The larger northern section is aligned with the house and features curved flank walls that connect to it. A triangular arched gate, which includes granite in and out quoins and voussoirs, is inscribed with the date J.C. H.H.C. 1842, although it appears older. At the northern end of the driveway in front of the house, there is a pair of red granite gatepiers topped with ball finials. A similar pair is located at the southern end, featuring curved flank walls and square rubble-built lodges with tall finials, which seem to have served as the old main entrance, both dating from the mid 18th century. Additionally, there is another pair of gatepiers at the southeast corner of the garden along the Home Farm drive, which are rusticated and capped with pyramids.
