Description

Monymusk House is a large L-plan mansion with a southwest wing added in 1888. The main structure dates back to around 1584, possibly incorporating older elements, and measures 49 feet by 46 feet. The L-plan features a southern projection and was originally three stories tall with battlements and corbelled angle rounds. The heads of the second-floor windows on the east side are elaborately decorated with hoods on sculptured corbels. The ground floor is vaulted, and the hall on the first floor was restored to its original state in 1937. It features a large heraldic emblem over the fireplace, which was restored under the supervision of J.M. Dick Peddie in 1886, along with an ogee-headed aumbry, a 17th-century door, and a painted ceiling.

The house underwent reconstruction between 1719 and 1720 by Alexander Jaffrey of Kingswells, during which the battlements were removed. A new top addition was created with a platformed roof that houses a high library with a fine Carolean-style ceiling on the west side, and two stories of bedrooms on the east side. The northeast wing, measuring 60 feet long, dates from the 16th or 17th century and was originally a single-storey structure with an attic, later altered to two stories by Jaffrey.

The internal woodwork is primarily from the early 19th century, featuring an oriel bay designed by Dick Peddie. The southern wing, also from the 16th or 17th century and 43 feet long, includes a circular southeast tower that was originally a single-storey structure with an attic but was rebuilt as three stories by Jaffrey. The original woodwork remains on the first and second floors, while the ground floor has been remodeled to include a new porch, a bow window, and a two-storey library wing that incorporates an old oilette in the north wall, completed in 1888.

The billiard room contains the Monymusk Cross Slab, a 9th-century artifact made from a 7-foot striated granite boulder, which is incised with cross, step, disc, and double ring symbols from Nether Mains. The office, also by Alexander Jaffrey from 1721, has seen little alteration and features checked openings, with harling throughout.
