Description

St Mary's Parish Church in Monymusk dates from the late 12th to early 13th century and was originally an Augustinian Priory. The church features an aisle-less nave measuring 52 feet 11 inches by 26 feet and a chancel that is 52 feet 10 inches by 21 feet, along with a west tower that is 22 feet by 19 feet and approximately 60 feet high. It is constructed of thin coursed granite with sandstone dressings. The west door is a simple round arch with a hoodmould, and there is a plain round arch connecting the tower to the nave, as well as a chancel arch supported by three shafts with cushion capitals.

The church underwent alterations in post-Reformation times, particularly between 1685 and 1693, when a minister's door and other openings were added to the south wall in the mid-18th century, featuring a chamfer. In 1822, the church was reconstructed; the walls were lowered to 22 feet 6 inches, the roof was replaced, and the south side was remodeled to include two large windows flanked by two smaller ones, with new granite dressings. A piended north aisle was added, 14 feet of the tower was removed, 6 feet was re-erected, and a slated spire was added. In July 1851, the chancel was largely abandoned and unroofed to serve as a burial enclosure. The spire was demolished in 1891 and replaced with a bad crenellated parapet.

A partial restoration was carried out by A. Marshall Mackenzie in 1929, during which the church was reoriented to the east, the west part of the chancel was restored and reopened, and the north aisle was closed off and converted to a vestry. Notable monuments include those for the Forbes-Leslie family of Abersnithick from the late 16th century, a large series for the Grant family, a memorial for Sir Archibald from 1820 by Pistell, and one for Commander Arthur from 1850, among others. The church also features a clock made by Wm. Lunan in 1792 with a clock face added in 1865, a Mowat bell from 1748, and part of the jougs remains extant.
