Description
Kirkton House in Cairnie is a former manse built between 1784 and 1785. This two-storey and attic building features three bays and a symmetrical Classical design, positioned on elevated ground. A later two-storey extension was added to the rear in the 19th century. The exterior is constructed of squared and coursed dark whinstone, accented with contrasting sandstone margins and raised long and short quoins, while the rear is harled. The ground floor windows have moulded architraves and cornices, and there is an eaves cornice with a low blocking course.
The principal elevation to the south has a slightly advanced central bay with a pediment. It features a simple corniced Doric-pilastered doorpiece, which houses a four-panel, two-leaf entrance door topped with a rectangular fanlight. There are also two later timber pedimented dormers. The windows are predominantly four-pane timber sash and case, with some twelve-pane lying pane windows on the east elevation. The roof is covered with grey slate and has raised skews and skew putts, along with coped gable stacks.
Inside, as of 2007, some original features remain, including four-panel timber doors, decorative plaster cornicing, and working shutters.
To the south of the house, a walled garden remains, with walls on the south and east sides from the original rectangular-plan structure, made of rubble with some coping on the east side.
